‘Mate, mistakes are like a boomerang, no matter how far you throw it, it’ll fly right back at cha’,’ -Emma.
Prologue[]
An Aussie Shepherd pup cheerily pranced around on the dusty red dirt right beside an old ute. Her soft blue eyes fell upon another vehicle that parked beside hers. Curious, she ran to the car to saw another Aussie pup, just like her. His scent was familiar, she wag her tail.
“Ello there, nice to meet cha’ again, it’s been so long since I’ve seen you!” She exclaimed, the other pup smiled. But his expression changed.
“Emma, your owner looks like they’re going somewhere further than here,” his ears slowly dropped. Emma looked back.
“I am going to the US… But I promise to stay best friends!” She tried to keep the conversation lighthearted, but her owner scooped her up. The other dog grabbed a flower, he look up to see Emma being taken away.
“Wait, Emma, where’s your owner taking you?” He barked, sticking out the window, “I wanted to tell you something from when I first met cha'…” He was cut off by the car, it roared as it drove off, a cloud of dust followed, he whined silently, he sunk back in his seat, slowly placing the flower to his paws “I wanted to say that, I liked you..”
Chapter 1[]
Setekh lazily bask in his soft little bed, the sun beaming down on his skin. Horus sat in a bird cage which was rested upon a table. Emma ran through the doggy door in an instant, startling the two.
“New friends! Quick look, they’re an odd bunch,” She wagged her tail as she pointed outside, Setekh groaned as he dragged himself towards the door, looking outside. He saw a caracal, a bobcat, a young bear and a coyote. In a flash he slammed the door shut, Horus looked at him, puzzled.
“What’s wrong? I haven’t seen you look so distressed,” Horus chirped, Emma nodded.
“Forest animals! They're probably after us!” Setekh hissed, Emma looked at both of them.
“Wait, animals are after ya’? Mate, why didn’t cha’ tell me?” Emma barked, a slight growl follow.
“How do you know they’re after us?” Horus leaned forward, concern slowly grabbing onto him.
“The cub, the Mother Bear’s cub is with them! And Willow is there, you know, old bobcat, grumpy, sorta my friend. Now she knows I killed the Mother Bear and that you're with me, we’re gonna get torn to pieces!” Setekh could hear them outside, Horus’s feathers rose as Emma looked at them both, disgusted.
“What? Bloody murder? Mate, you both are wanted criminals!” Emma snarled, her orange bandana blazed in the sun, along with her eyes, “I let you stay here for six months, and I’ve even convinced my owner to keep you for longer, and now you tell me that I’ve bin’ living with bloody murderers!” She cornered Setekh, growling loudly.
Chapter 2[]
“Emma, you good mate? You’re a bit loud ay’?” Her owner walked in, she wore loose clothing with a maple leaf on it, small books in her hand, “I got their passports ready, c’mon girl, let’s go!” She held a suitcase by her side. She put down some sort of carrier, “C’mon Simon, in boy,” she opened the carrier up, Setekh stared at the dark box, he reluctantly walked in, she closed the carrier and picked up Horus’s cage. Emma followed them closely as they hopped onto the ute. The car roared as it started to pick up speed. Emma could see the other animals outside, they looked at her for a second, then Setekh and Horus, all three of them could feel the animal’s hatred boiling. After what felt like days, they could see many tall human dens everywhere, moving boxes surround them as they noisily hissed and growled at each other, humans everywhere, pigeons and pets, human cubs etc.
“Where are we going?” Horus asked Emma softly, expecting a sudden outburst.
“Canada, Jocelyn goes there every winter,” she stubbornly spoke, averting eye contact. She knew forest folk like them would have no idea what that was, but she spoke no further, they drove on, a thick stench of smoke clouded their noses, the humans didn’t seem to notice the poor quality of air. The ute approached a den that could reach for the skies, supersized white birds flew from the den, they didn’t even flap their wings once, more of them roost on the ground, humans in funny clothing tending for them, the car stopped abruptly, Setekh and Horus were unloaded.
“Well, as long as we’re getting away from the others,” Setekh looked back to Horus with a slight smile, Horus nodded back. As the big doors slid open, noise surrounded them. It was cold and bright, Setekh hissed, shutting his eyes, his paws covering his ears.
“Simon, calm down, you don’t need to be scared; me' daughter was also scared of airports, and if she managed to get over her fear, you can too... May her soul rest in peace,” Jocelyn murmur, keeping her gaze low, followed by a solemn look. Setekh slowly opened his eyes, his dark skin glowing gold, he looked out of the carrier to find a small fox pup following them, the same as before.
Chapter 3[]
“What do you want from me! Go away!” He snarled at the fox, Horus took notice, his feathers glowing in a soft cyan.
“Don’t scare the pup! What news may you address to us,” Horus leaned forward from his bird cage.
“Mr Setekh sir, and Mr Horus sir.. you have to fix your mistakes, or something bad will happen!” She childishly smiled.
“It’s for our survival, if we’re caught, we’re dead!” Horus chirped, the fox pup frowned.
“I warned you... A fierce bear will cross your path! But don’t worry, I’ll be your spirit guide. I’ll help you to reconcile with your past mistakes and all will be well!” She faded away, they both stopped glowing.
“That bear is after us? I doubt it,” Setekh yawned, he drowsily lie down, dozing off to sleep. Jocelyn boarded the plane, Setekh, Horus and Emma were stowed away into a dimly lit room with numerous other animals. Horus opened his cage, looking around cautiously as he spotted other animals in their carriers. He hopped out, his steps gentle, a corgi snapped his head in Horus’s direction.
“What are you doing! Get back in your cage!” The corgi barked with alarm, Horus jumped, startled.
“Mate, get back in!” Emma joined, “Only a fool would go outside their cage at this time!” She scolded.
“What, are humans near?” Horus’s eyes darted around, the plane took off abruptly, the carriers slid to one side, Horus slid along with them. He attempted to fly out of the way, only to tumble down as he crashed into Setekh’s cage.
"What was that for?" Setekh exclaimed, shortly after he fell forward, hitting his head onto the bars. Barks, hisses and growls erupted as the plane descended higher into the sky. The white bird howled with them before the carriers slid back into position.
Chapter 4[]
Jocelyn gazed out the window, she spotted dark and heavy clouds ahead. But she had no reason to fear. She turned to the screen in front of her and decided she could catch up with the news in Canada. The programme had started with a female reporter heading straight to there introduction.
'Good morning, I'm...' The reporters words trailed off, Jocelyn tried to pay attention, but all her efforts were futile. She was about to give up until the reporters' words caught her attention. 'In Onitaro, eight year old girl Max Heron has suffered third degree burns after running into a raging house fire to save her cat Octavia. Police have found that her babysitter, 36 year old Jonas Miles has started the fire on purpose and has been charged with child endangerment, attempted third degree murder and animal endangerment. Yet, Max is considered a local hero to many, and a role model to many young children. As for her parents, they are yet to be contacted as her father and her mother are not yet identified. The authorities are reaching out to them as we speak. Now onto Annabelle with the weather...'
Jocelyn felt deep pity for the girl and her father. But her sorrow depended without an explanation. She skipped back to see Max's face again. She felt an immense sense of familiarity from the girl. She looked like her daughter Michelle, no- Mina, yes, Mina. But she knew that couldn't have been her daughter. Jocelyn had been forced to divorce her husband while they were still deeply in love. She had lost her one year old daughter to her mother-in-law, since then she hadn't seen her daughter, and her ex husband wasn't allowed to say anything. She heaved a shuddering sigh.
