A Keeper of the Lost Cities fanfiction shipping Gisela and Gethen.
Gisela’s POV
Gethen grinned. “Is that Cassius Sencen?”
I looked at the figure in front of me.
Slicked blond hair.
Ice blue eyes.
Arrogant expression.
Perfect.
I shushed him. “Gethen, he’ll hear us!” I held my list up to the light again. “But yes, I believe he is. It’s so handy to have a Technopath that can break into the Registry, isn’t it?”
“And he’s an Empath?” Gethen clarified.
“Yes. And he’s perfect for the job.”
“You realize you’re gonna have to kiss him, right?” Gethen laughed.
I rolled my eyes. “Yes, Gethen. I’m willing to make the sacrifices.”
Gethen nodded approvingly. “Good to know you’re all in.”
“I am. And our Technopaths are trying to figure out the riddle for stellarlune. We’re going to figure it out at lunch.”
“I can’t. I have detention.” Gethen smirked. “Magnate Emery had no idea what hit him. I do though!”
I scoffed. “Honestly, Gethen. The one time I need you to do something that’s actually useful for a change.” Cassius turned the corner, out of sight.
“Quickly! Follow him!” Gethen and I scampered down the hall of the Gold Tower, ignoring Master Prentice’s calls of ‘no running!’ We hid behind the golden flareadon statue in the atrium, watching Cassius gather his books from his locker.
“What now?” Gethen whisper-hissed.
“I’m gonna go talk to him.” I squared my shoulders. Gethen rolled his eyes.
“Girls,” he muttered. “I still think you could’ve chosen a hotter Empath.”
I ignored him. My whole plan revolved around Cassius Sencen. I wasn't letting Gethen mess me up. So, I ducked out of our hiding place and strode up to Cassius, offering my warmest smile.
“Hello. I’m Gisela Jarsdel. Nice to meet you.”
“Cassius Sencen,” he said, shaking my hand. Seriously? He shook my hand! Cassius Sencen shook my hand! I tried my best to keep a cool expression as he told me, “To what do I owe this pleasure.” Hot and polite. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad!
“Hail me on my Imparter any time Cassius.” I gave him a small smile and left.
“What were you saying, Gethen?” I asked when I ducked behind the flareadon statue again. “That is how you do it.” Gethen looked slightly impressed.
“So, did you get him to hail you?” He asked after clearing his throat.”
“I guess we’ll see.” I gave him a smug smile. “I won’t be surprised if he does.”
Gethen rolled his eyes. But a part of him looked a little… hurt.
Nah.
He couldn’t… right?
Wait.
Maybe.
I mean, it made sense. After all, have you seen me?
But I shook it off and focused on the bigger picture. Someday, I would build my own Nightfall. And someday, Cassius Sencen would be the perfect Empath to help me run it.
+++
At the end of the day, I walked into my spacious room in the Gold Tower.
I checked the shelf. My Archetype was untouched. Pleased, I sat down on the bed. My Imparter beeped. Incoming hail from Cassius Sencen.
+Chapter Two+
Gethen’s POV
I stood in the gilded atrium, waiting for Gisela in our usual spot. I finally spotted her running towards me. A smug smirk was on her face. What game was she playing?
“Gethen,” she panted as she finally reached me. “I win.”
“What game?” I inquired.
“Cassius hailed me.” she winked. Seriously!
Okay, Gethen, I thought to myself. Game face. She can’t know.
“That’s… great!” I managed with what I hoped was a convincing grin. But if Gisela noticed my lack of enthusiasm, she didn’t show it.
“Our plan is starting to unfold well.” she said with a victorious smile.
Before I could formulate a response, Magnate Emery’s face flashed on all the walls, signaling the start of the day.
“Good morning, prodigies!” he began. “Due to a massive stinkbomb let out throughout the campus, all sessions today will be canceled. Also, may I please see Gethen Ondsinn in my makeshift office. Unfortunately, my office is unusable thanks to the fact that the stink seemed to have started in there.”
“Gethen,” Gisela groaned. “The one time I need you. Was that prank really worth it?”
“Yes–I mean no,” I replied. “But it looks like I’m in for it. Hopefully my punishment won’t include dealing with the stink.” I winked. But it probably would. With that thought, I scowled.
+++
“Gethen Ondsinn,” Magnate Emery yelled. “You are part of the Elite! Seeing you in my office every other day is a major disappointment.”
“Technically, we’re not in your office right now,” I smirked.
“ANOTHER WEEK OF DETENTION FOR BACKTALK!” Emery bellowed.
Oops. Gisela was going to kill me. But I knew better than to reason with an angry Magnate Emery. It looked like I was in for yet another talking-to. Oh, well. At least she looked hot while she was angry.
“DID YOU HEAR ME, ONDSINN?” Emery bellowed again. “I ASKED IF YOU WANTED TO ADD TO THAT NUMBER.”
This guy was just asking for some more major pranking. But, I shook my head. “No sir.”
“Good. Now get out of my office, Gethen. And I don’t want to see you here again for a long time.”
Please, like that would happen. With that, I smirked and left.
+++
I exited the office to find Gisela standing outside.
“More detention? Now is not a good time for distractions, Gethen.” she simply told me.
“I thought there was never too much time for that,” I replied. “Plus, isn’t Cassius a distraction for you?”
“Cassius is a crucial part of my plan!” Gisela informed me loudly. Maybe a little too loudly…
“Plan for what?” Cassius snapped.
+Chapter Three+
Gisela’s POV
“Plan for what?” Cassius asked from behind me. Kraken. My mind screamed for a good excuse, but I kept getting distracted by Cassius’s mega hot looks.
“My plan for… having an amazing future.” I replied, relieved when Cassius looked convinced enough. Or maybe he was just distracted at the moment.
“And who’s this?” he asked, looking at Gethen with sharp eyes.
“My good friend since Level Three, Gethen.” I told him.
“Nice to meet you, Gethen.” But his eyes were still razor-sharp when he reached forward to shake Gethen’s hand. That made me… uncomfortable, for some reason.
“Anyways,” I said, flipping my hair. “Enjoying the day off?”
“Yep. I’ve been looking for you.” Cassius turned a slight pink. Yes! So far, my plan is seeming successful.
“And why is that?” I asked. Gethen snorted. Either Cassius didn’t hear or he ignored him as he continued.
“I was hoping… that you’d want to go to Atlantis with me this weekend.” he winked. Gethen coughed something that sounded a lot like smooth. Cassius winked again.
“Sure!” I side-smirked at Gethen. I knew my plan would win. Just like I knew my Nightfall would succeed. And it would be better than Vespera’s ever was.
I thought you needed Vespera, Gethen transmitted.
HE WAS READING MY THOUGHTS!!!!
I did not give you permission to enter my mind! I cursed Gethen in my mind, hoping he heard every word.
But don’t you? Gethen pressed. I sighed.
Yes. But that’s for me to figure out later. I conceded.
“Did you hear me?” Cassius interrupted. “I said, do you want me to meet you outside Claws, Wings, Horns, and Things on Saturday?”
“Sure!” I told him. Cassius looked between me and Gethen.
“Telepaths,” he grumbled. Then he walked away.
+++
“So, are you excited for your hot date tonight?” Gethen leaned on the doorframe.
“I’m not excited, persay. This is for the legacy, remember? But you’re right about one thing. He is hot.”
“No, he’s not,” Gethen scoffed.
“Yes, he is.” I insisted.
“Whatever you say.” Gethen rolled his eyes. “So, what’s the game plan? But if making out is on the list, I do not want to hear the details.”
I crossed my arms. “Like I’d share them.”
“Oh please, Gisela. We both know that you tend to overshare.”
“I do not.” I insisted.
“Yes, you do. And I so don’t want to hear about any lip-on-lip action between you and Cassius.”
“I am so over this conversation.”
“So am I. Enjoy your date!” Gethen called over his shoulder as he left.
+++
“Good evening, Gisela.” Cassius met me outside Claws, Wings, Horns and Things at our designated time. I looked up. I was happy Gethen wasn’t around to eavesdrop on my thoughts. Cassius looked good. And my mind didn’t seem able to form any coherent sentences at the moment.
“H-hey?” I managed to formulate.
“What’s going on with you and Gethen?” Cassius demanded.
+Chapter Four+
Gisela’s POV
“What’s going on with you and Gethen?” Cassius demanded.
“Nothing!” I swore.
“Uh-huh.” Cassius looked anything but convinced. He reached out to brush my arm, which I didn’t think anything of until he jumped back and said, “I know you’re lying right now. I can feel it.”
Empaths.
How would I be able to get out of this one?
“Gethen and I are friends. That’s it.” I promised. Which was true… mostly. Honestly, I didn’t know how I felt. But Cassius did not need to know that. I looked away before Cassius could call me out again.
Cassius leaned against the window panes of the store.
“What do you want to do now?”
I had so many ideas.
Cassius looked like he wanted to say something, but before he could, I leaned over and kissed him.
+++
Gethen’s POV
I was almost done with my best stinkbomb. All I needed was some gulon gass. Unfortunately, the only place to find a gulon is Claws, Wings, Horns, and Things. Praying that Gisela and Cassius had left—that was not an image I needed—I lifted my crystal and began my journey to Atlantis.
I was ready to enter the store when I saw Gisela and Cassius. I tried to brace myself, but nothing could prepare me for what I was about to see. Is there a way I can wash my own memories? I immediately ran to the bubble as fast as I could. Then I took out my crystal and leaped to the Gold Tower.
I didn’t even care if I faded away.
It would’ve been worth it.
+++
I paced around my room. Gisela had a lot of explaining to do. I mean, she’d only been on one date with the guy!
I was on what felt like the millionth pace when I heard a knock on the door.
That better be Gisela, I thought to myself. I may even have transmitted it to the door. Sure enough, it was her.
I stormed up to the door and flung it open.
“ONE DATE, GISELA! ONE DATE!” I yelled. She looked perplexed.
“I saw you kissing,” I told her with a look that said, yeah, you should be scared. But the look on her face was not fear.
It was defiance.
“Really, Gisela!” I yelled. “Too fast!”
“But he’s super hot!” Gisela argued.
“Well so am I!”
“Of course you are!” After she said that, she covered her mouth with her hand, like she couldn’t believe she just said that.
I looked into her ice blue eyes. “You are too, you know.”
Then she leaned towards me and… you can guess what happened next. But it ended all too soon when Cassius’ voice asked, “Gisela? What are you doing?”
+Chapter Five+
Gisela’s POV[]
“Gisela? What are you doing?” Kraken.
Kraken, kraken, kraken, kraken!
I didn’t think that Cassius had to be an Empath to feel the terror running through me as he walked through the doorway. I also knew that he didn’t have to feel too many more emotions to realize that regret was not mixed in.
It was true that Cassius was smokin’ hot… [A/N: I had to…] but was he really the love of my life?
No. But Gethen wasn’t an Empath. Cassius was. So I knew I had to end things with Gethen there. Even if I wished I didn’t have to. But how would I get out of this? I wracked my brain for the answer, but the hole I had dug myself into was much too deep.
Part of me wanted to stay with Gethen, and not just because I didn’t think I could find my way out of this. My legacy needed to set sail. And my own relationships shouldn’t get in the way of that.
And at the moment, I had to find an excuse to put a band-aid on the problem.
“I don’t know what happened! There must be a Mesmer nearby.” I mentally slapped myself in the face. What kind of excuse was that? Cassius answered that for me.
“Lame excuse,” he told me. He looked at me with betrayal. “I didn’t think you were the type to cheat, Gisela. I guess I was wrong.”
“I guess you’re wrong about many things,” Gethen told him. I fought the urge to slap him.
Hard.
In the face.
I gritted my teeth and turned back to Cassius after giving Gethen a murder-glare.
Cassius turned and left, but only after he gave me one more hurt look. I was in too much shock to race after him.
+++
What was I going to do? I had to end things with Gethen and get Cassius back. But how? Many thoughts formed.
Should I give him lusters?
Write a series of mushy love notes?
I cringed at the last part.
No way that was happening.
I ended things with Gethen first. Then I went up to Cassius.
“What do you want,” Cassius demanded.
“Gethen and I are over” I insisted.
“Well, that's disappointing for you.” he turned away.
“Cassius, please!” I yelled after him.
+++
“I can’t believe he agreed,” Gethen scoffed.
“I can be very persuasive when I want to be.” I winked.
“Can you, now?”
“Of course! Now, back on topic. We need to research Shadowflux and Quintessence for our first step of stellarlune.”
“But interfering with your love life is way more interesting.”
“Well, that’s disappointing. You’re just as much a part of this as I am.”
Gethen smiled at me.
“Am I though? This is all your idea,”
I was about to try and formulate a good response. Then, Cassius’ voice filled the room.
“Gisela? We need to talk.”
+Chapter Six+
Gethen’s POV
“Gisela? We need to talk.”
Sorry, Gisela mouthed as Cassius led her out of the room.
I crouched down and silently followed them, hiding in the doorway so I could still hear what they were saying.
“You were with Gethen again?” I heard Cassius tell her.
“Gethen and I are friends,” Gisela clarified.
“That was not what it looked like last week!”
“We made a mistake!”
“You can say that again.”
Awkward silence followed.
“I’m sorry,” Gisela told him softly.
“You should be,” Cassius retorted. “You betrayed my trust. But even worse, you lied. And that is even harder for me to forgive.”
“I’ve learned my lesson, and I’ll never do it again. Aren’t we all hoping for a second chance?”
It took Cassius longer to respond to that one.
“Fine. But no more funny business with Gethen!”
“I promise.”
I started hearing something that sounded a lot like kissing, and I ran away to safety.
+++
“My legacy prevails!” Gisela cheered, pumping her fist.
“Yeah, congrats.” I grumbled.
“Come in Gethen. If it were up to me…”
I looked up, expecting the end of the sentence.
“But it’s not. I need an Empath for Nightfall, not a Telepath. And I have to make sacrifices to make it happen.” Her eyes pleaded for me to understand. And I did.
Sort of.
“Well,” I said, clapping my hands. “Time to go to session. See you!” Then I turned and fled.
+++
Gisela’s POV
It was finally the weekend, and I was going to visit my parents. And I was going to bring Cassius. Gethen was not happy.
Just as I suspected.
“But I usually come!” he complained. “And we do epic pranking!”
“Well, it’s going to have to wait for next weekend. I hailed my parents last night and they insisted on meeting him.”
“Fine,” he yielded. “But I’m coming next weekend. I need a break from my parents always saying ‘Gethen, the pranking needs to stop.’” He made a face. “And your parents tell me, ‘Gethen, never change.’”
“Yes, yes, you are a master prankster.” It was kind of true. But I rolled my eyes anyway. I was with Gethen’s parents on this one. If we really wanted to achieve our goals, the pranking needed to stop. But I was not going to be the one to second it.
“Thank you,” he almost looked proud.
+++
When we arrived at Riverbloom, my parents sat us down for a formal dinner. But right as Cassius sat down in his chair, the floor started to shake.
“What is going on?” I screamed
+Chapter Seven+
Gisela’s POV
“What is going on?” I screamed.
Everything was shaking.
The floor.
The walls.
The roof.
A crack appeared under Cassius’s chair.
With a large, room shaking crash, the chandelier fell right on his head.
“I’m fine,” Cassius grunted.
He didn’t look fine.
Then again, you couldn’t really see him underneath all the gems and crystals.
“No, you’re not! We need to get you to the physician!” I tried to dig him out, but no such luck. We needed to use telekinesis, and the only person who had strong enough reserves was Gethen, because he was a Telepath. He also used it a lot during his pranks.
Then it hit me. No pun intended.
It was Gethen. Gethen was the one who used his reserve to create that earthquake.
Was this all part of some sort of lame prank or showdown?
I hailed Gethen, who, uncoincidentally, was right outside Riverbloom.
“We needed telekinesis!” I screamed through the device.
“Coming, coming,” he grumbled.
Meanwhile, my parents were still trying to untangle Cassius.
Gethen only succeeded in lifting Cassius up with the chandelier, then losing his concentration and dropping him.
Good job, Gethen.
“Oops, sorry,” he said. He didn’t look sorry.
“What are you even doing here, Gethen?” Cassius grunted from under the tangle of crystal.
“I was in the mood for some epic pranking today, and when I heard you were at Gisela’s house today, I just couldn’t resist.” Gethen smirked. “Looks like I did my job well.”
“No! Not well!” Cassius complained. Unfortunately, our attempts to free him just got him more intertwined with the once-beautiful chandelier.
“Why not prank Magnate Emery, like you always do?” I had to ask.
“Because I’ve found that parking Cassius is way more fun. And I won’t get punished!” he flashed an evil grin.
“I don’t know about that!” Cassius warned. “I may look like a delicate flower, but I mean business!”
“Delicate flower?” Gethen had to ask, not bothering to hide his snicker. Cassius was finally able to stand up. He rolled his eyes.
“It means that I’m going to get you when you least expect it, Ondsinn.”
Gethen smirked. “Bring it! I’m always ready.”
+++
The following Monday, pieces of paper were all over Foxfire. And they all read the same thing: The Cassius Times. And the first article was titled, Delinquent Gethen Ondsinn Almost Kills Member of Noble Family, Cassius Sencen. By Cassius Sencen. The other pages followed the criteria of what looked like Gethen slams.
“CASSIUS!” I stomped up the stairs to Cassius’s room. “WHAT IS THIS?”
“I told him I’d get him back when he least expected it.” Cassius said calmly. “And must I say, I think I did mighty well.”
“No! This is not okay!” I yelled. “You and Gethen need to calm this feud down right now.”
“Why? That guy needs to be taken down.” Cassius put his hands on his hips menacingly.
“No he does not!” I insisted.
“Yes, he does. And I’m here to make sure it happens.”
+Chapter Eight+
Gethen’s POV[]
I was walking down to study hall when a hand reached out and pulled me into a closet. I was about to scream when I realized: I knew that arm.
“Gisela?” I asked. Her eyes seemed to glow in the dark, making her look even more—
“You two need to calm the heck down.” Gisela whisper-yelled, interrupting my thoughts.
“Why me?” I asked, studying my dim surroundings. That’s when I noticed Cassius. “Oh. It’s you.” If Gisela thought that I was ready to forgive Cassius after The Cassius Times stunt, she would be sorely mistaken. He was just asking for another one of my genius pranks!
“What did you think was going to happen?” Cassius asked, narrowing his eyes. But when he opened his mouth to say something else, Gisela cut him off.
“Nothing was going to happen,” she told us sternly. “You know that, Cassius.”
“I was talking to Gethen,” he said.
I snorted. “Please. As if.”
Gisela rolled her eyes again.
“Talk it out, you two. I’ll be back at the end of my session, and you both better be in here and nothing should be broken.” She left, closing the door behind her.
“This isn’t over,” was all Cassius said before he raised his crystal to the dim light and leaped away.
After the bell rang, I went to Gisela’s room in the Gold Tower to put some of her plans in a memory log.
+++
Cassius’s POV
I heard giggling from down the hall.
Wait.
It was coming from Gisela’s room!
I ran down the hall, and when I opened the door, I was shocked to see what was happening.
I should have seen this coming.
Gethen and Gisela were staring into each other's eyes.
And to make it worse, Gethen’s hands were cupping her face!
Before I could stop myself, I screamed “Gisela? Not Again!”
+Chapter Nine+
Gisela’s POV[]
I was just finishing replaying my genius new plan for Gethen to project in my memory log when I heard the door to my room creak open. And that was followed by an anguished shout of, “Gisela! Not again!” It was Cassius.
I was about to open up my mouth with an annoyed ‘what’ when I finally realized what it looked like Gethen and I were doing. And I almost jumped 20 feet backwards.
“Cassius! It isn't what it looks like!” I cried.
“What is it then?” Cassius countered. “Because what it looks like is that you almost cheated on me. Again.”
“Gethen was just projecting something in my memory log.” I promised without thinking about what was just projected inside.
“Show me.” Cassius demanded.
Kraken.
I didn’t think about that before I told him what was going on. I couldn’t show Cassius my mastermind plan… especially because it included my plan for him.
He wasn’t supposed to see that yet. He wasn’t even supposed to see that remotely soon. As much as I hated what I might have to do, I was willing to do all things necessary to make my Nightfall become a reality. I looked down at my feet, brainstorming and trying to come up with a different solution. But there was no other solution that would restore Cassius’s total trust with me. So I looked back up at Cassius’s furious face.
Wow.
He even looked hot when he was mad.
But no smile I gave him would make him forget the memory log.
“Show me the memory log,” he repeated, cementing what I needed to do.
I looked at Gethen.
Looks like it’s a wash, I mouthed. I snapped my fingers and a blue cloth appeared. A sedative.
I pressed it against Cassius’s face before he could ask any questions.
When he stopped struggling and fell asleep, Gethen pressed his fingers against his temples and closed his eyes, washing the memory away. It was so helpful having a Washer on hand.
“While he’s asleep…” He raised his eyebrows suggestively.
“Gethen! No!”
He shrugged. “Your loss.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re ridiculous.”
“Cassius won’t mind!”
“Haha. You’re funny,” I said, heaping on the sarcasm.
“Funny, I’ve always considered myself more of a prankster type.” Gethen said with a wink. I tried to roll my eyes with passion, but… the way he was smirking… it was way too hot. Stop it, I mentally scolded myself. But I couldn’t stop my mind swarming with things I shouldn’t repeat.
“Shut up,” I scolded.
“Make me.”
Let’s just not mention what happened next. All too soon I had to pull back, because unfortunately air is a necessary substance.
“I really hope Cassius doesn’t wake up.”
“Yes ma’am,” Gethen said with a mock salute.
I laughed and kissed him again.
+++
“Where am I?” Cassius said groggily as he woke up.
“In your room. It appears you drank too much fizzleberry wine last night.” I leaned over him. Yeah, I lied. But what was I supposed to say? You saw me project my plans in a memory log and I had to have Gethen erase your memories? And then Gethen and I—nope, not gonna finish that sentence. I shook my head. That was not something I was proud of. Or… was it?
Either way, I was thankful that Cassius didn’t notice my head shake.
“Really? I can’t remember anything from the past night.” He told me.
“That would explain that.” I replied simply.
“Are you okay, Gisela? You look a little spooked.”
“Do I?” my voice was a little squeakier than I intended it to be.
“Yeah. Did something happen?” Gethen peaked his head in the doorway. He was smirking hard, and I hoped that Cassius didn’t notice. I gave Gethen a glare that could’ve withered flowers.
“No,” I told him sternly, but when Cassius turned away, I gave him a little wink. He grinned.
Glad to know that my amazing pranking turns you on. He transmitted. But Cassius must have recovered from his post-drug daze, because he asked, “why are you smiling? You too, Gethen.”
“Long story,” I said. “How are you feeling?”
“Not great,” was his reply.
“Of course,” Gethen said with a grin. “That makes sense!”
Cassius nodded, not long before he fell asleep again.
+Chapter Ten+
Gethen’s POV[]
It was time… for my epic prank. Cassius was in for it!
I almost felt a little bad. Not really, though.
Anyways, I was tiptoeing through the Foxfire halls, supplies under my arm, trying to be as discreet as possible. Cassius wouldn’t know what would be hitting him until it was too late. And I could beat any retaliation that he could come up with.
I grabbed my supplies and left for Cassius’ room.
It was time to show him that he could never beat me.
+++
Cassius’s POV
I was exhausted. After so much homework, I was ready for night-night land. But when I opened the door, my room was a mess!
“What’s going on?” I demanded. “Gethen, is this some lame idea of payback?”
No answer.
That’s when I noticed a note. Open first. It pointed to my closet. I opened my closet and let out a bone-chilling scream.
It was Gethen!
After further investigation, I noticed that it was a cardboard cutout of Gethen. Which triggered even more screaming.
I opened all my closets and drawers. Each nook was filled with a cardboard Gethen. I opened my last closet, expecting another cutout. But I was not expecting to see an alive elvin form!
It was Gethen! I screamed even louder than before.
“What the heck are you doing in my room, Gethen? And going through all my personal stuff?”
“Oh, relax. What were you so afraid I would find, Cassius? Also, I could find out much more if I went inside your head right now.” Gethen smirked.
“Get out now! You are disrupting the privacy of a noble child!” I stamped my foot menacingly. Gethen cracked up in the middle of my bedroom.
“Noble… child?” He gasped between laughs. I frowned defensively.
“Get out of my room.” I glared at him until he obeyed.
Satisfied, I got ready for bed. But when I peeled back the covers, I screamed again.
I saw yet another cardboard Gethen.
Under my covers.
Unimaginable!
“GETHEN ONDSINN!” I screamed. I heard footsteps scamper down the hall.
Gethen. Would. Pay.
+Chapter Eleven+
Cassius’s POV[]
Gethen. Would. Pay.
I’d make sure of it.
I just had to find the best form of payback.
I contacted my countless amount of friends to ask for help.
Being popular was an amazing asset.
My Technopath friend, Anwir, had a genius idea.
It mostly revolved around hacking his Imparter.
+++
I snuck into his room (which required ditching class–but it was worth it!) and found his Imparter located unsuspectedly on top of his bed. He just made things too easy.
Anwir tiptoed in behind me, grabbed the Imparter off the bed, and whispered weird things into it. The imparter blinked green.
“Perfect! Now, let’s go.” But before we were able to exit, we head footsteps proceeding down the hall. Uh oh. Anwir and I ducked behind the door, holding our breath. I didn’t know how Gethen did this for fun. It almost made me want to forget my next comeback idea. But, a war’s a war. Sometimes you have to sacrifice your time to win. And I was going to win hard.
But I saw Gethen walk in through the crack in the doorway. In the middle of class. He must be ditching.
The nerve!
“Show me Gisela Jarsdel,” he told the Imparter. Not long afterward, the Imparter flashed. But not with Gisela’s face.
With mine.
+++
Gethen’s POV
“Cassius?” I asked. “Why do you have Gisela’s Imparter? She’s not with you, is she?”
“What?” came Gisela’s voice. She sounded completely confused.
“Gisela? Are you behind him or something?”
“What do you mean? Behind who? Why are you referring to me as Cassius?”
“He is holding your Imparter and looking into it right now!” I told her.
“No, he’s not.”
“Then why do I see–CASSIUS SENCEN! I KNOW YOU’RE OUT THERE! DID YOU RIG MY IMPARTER TO SHOW YOUR UGLY FACE?” Sadly, no peep in reply. “FINE!” I called out. “BUT JUST KNOW I WILL FIND YOU. THE WAR IS ON!”
“I don’t think he’s there.” Gisela told me.
“I think you’re right.”
“Okay.” she lowered her voice a little bit. “Just so you know, we need to keep this cheating thing under wraps. If Cassius finds out–”
“WHAT?!” Cassius fell out from behind the door.
“Cassius?” Gisela looked mortified, but quickly calmed as she seemed to remember something. “Should I conjure the sedative cloth over there so you can wash the memory?” she whispered through the Imparter.
I nodded. But Cassius looked anything but calm as he started asking a barrage of questions.
“Wash? Conjure? Sedative? CHEATING? What kind of weird game is going on around here while I’m not around?” Cassius screamed. The blue cloth appeared.
“Cassius, this will go much easier if you just stand still.”
“Really?” he scoffed. “You seriously think I’m just going to stand here while you wash my memories.”
“Yup. Or else I have to do this.” I tapped my temple, and Cassius stood stiff. “Perfect!” Cassius’ eyes rolled back as I washed his memories away.
+Epilogue+
Gisela’s POV[]
Ten years later…
Gethen leaned his head through the makeup room doorway.
“Ding, dong, are those wedding bells?” he joked.
I rolled my eyes and adjusted my white dress.
“I got to say, Gisela, you executed your plan perfectly. I can’t believe I had any doubts!” Gethen continued.
“Never underestimate me.”
“Don’t you want everyone to?”
“That’s a different story.”
“Is it now?”
“Yes. Now I’m getting married!”

Cassius’s POV
Gisela and I were finally moving into our new home. Candleshade, as I had dubbed it, was a magnificent 200-story wonder in the shape of a candelabra. Despite whatever Gisela says, it does not look like a fork, therefore I refused to let her call it Forkshire. Gethen was–unfortunately–still around, and was reporting news to Gisela frequently.
I was cleaning the closet one day when I came across a blue rag. I picked it up, and it smelled like… sedative. I fell to the floor as memories filled my brain.
Wait a second!
What the **** was that?!?!!?!??!?
“GISELAAAAAAAA!” I screamed.
