CELESTIALS: Awakening
Prologue
“Bring in the traitor!’’ An armored guard shouted out into the square. All was silent, even the wind had stopped as if it too was holding its breath. A young girl was dragged across the cobblestone floor, her head hanging low, arms limp in defeat. The warden lifted the girl’s chin to face a dark, shrouded figure. The figure stepped fourth, moonlight basking her face in a cold, ghostly glow. Her expression full of evil, malicious, joy. “Noctari of Blackreach! You are gathered here today to celebrate an execution of a traitor.’’ She spat the last word as if it had dirtied her tongue. Still keeping that smile she adjusted her crown of spiraled stars and summoned a warden to come forward.
The warden stepped into the light, with authoritative power noticeable in every step. His head was held high, velvet cloak swaying in an unseen breeze. He angled his palm to the ground, with a crack and a rumble of earth, a black abyss stretched out towards the girl. She straightened up trying to show no fear to the other, she took a deep breath knowing it may be her last.
“Astraea!’’ A voice screamed out, the girl whipped her head around at the sound of her name. A boy, around her age, sprinted forward. With a flick of his palm the chain around Astraea’s hands cracked and fell, seizing the opportunity she ran into the crowd, glancing behind her for the wardens to follow, but they did not…
She had turned just in time to see the boy who’d helped her get freedom being cornered by the wardens, he gave a glace of sorrow and love to Astraea before leaping into the abyss… A death sentence…No, a sacrifice…
“Eryx!” Astraea yelled, voice choked with raw emotion. Her heart felt as if it had been wrenched from her chest with iron talons of pain. Tears streaked down her face and the pain was soon replaced with anger, hot and burning.
She tore off, sprinting down alleys and roads as the wardens gave chase. She leaped over fenced walls like nothing, glancing back she realized they were still racing after her. Letting out a small grumble of annoyance she ran toward the Forest. She halted in front of the twisting and blackened trees ahead. She then turned to face the wardens, a small smile etching across her face.
A blast of blinding light screamed from her palm, forming an iridescent saber made of intertwined stars and constellations. She sprinted forward, plunging the weapon into the warden’s chest with no hesitation. The sound of metal on metal roared out into the night. Astrea slashed and cut through them as if they were nothing, wiping their blood from her hand.
She looked around for the other wardens; none remained apart from one… The velvet cloaked figure lunged forward his sword colliding with hers, she twisted it, he parried the blow. “Met your match?” he snarled with a grin. She smiled back; her saber faltered before slipping into a rope of twisting and woven flames. He paused, stunned, he stumbled back his eyes wide with fear.
“Scared?” She laughed at him leaping forward and twisting the rope round his neck, gripping and scraping at his neck he collapsed to the ground, without stopping for mercy she jerked his head to one side. With a small crack he lay dead on the ground.
Gaining her breath back she turned running into the forest, not looking back this time.
She fell to her knees sobbing as the pain of Eryx’s death hit her like a stab in the heart. Her thoughts spun, was his death her fault? But more importantly the fact that, her brother was dead…
